The pre-production of Daybreakers started in Nov 2004 when Lionsgate purchased the script to the movie. This was created by the Spierig bros. The bros directed the 2003 film Undead. After two years, the film received financing help from Film Finance Corporation Australia. Due to this, the film is scheduled to be shot in Australia.
Casting started in May 2007 with Hawke getting the lead role. Later, Neill joined the cast. Filming started 2 months later on July 16, 2007. WETA, known for the creature consequences of The Lord of the Rings, also made the visuals for Daybreakers. The flick's budget was $21 million but it also received help from the state government.Principal photography was completed right on schedule in Sep 2007. There were some re-shoots but things followed thru.
